Bennett McAllister
San Bernardino, CA
TC: Where were you born and where did you grow up?
Bennet: Born in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada but raised in Santa Monica while my father taught at UCLA.
TC: What do you do for a living?
Bennett: Clinical Professor at Western University of Health Sciences College of Optometry.
TC: Can you tell us about our family.
Bennett: One of seven kids. Had three sons all of whom are grown, graduated college and married. One grand daughter who has curly red hair...whoda guessed?!
TC: How and why did you want to become a triathlete?
Bennett: Cycling buddies introduced me to the tri-life.
TC: What started you on the tri- kick?
Bennett: Not old enough to golf yet.
TC: How many triathlons have you competed in?
Bennett: None, as my knees blew out at age 18, ruining a promising athletic career but introducing me to a lifetime affair with cycling. Now, I Aquabike (triathlon with out the run)
TC: What were your feelings going into that first Triathlon?
Bennett: Tony lied to me. He said it was an event, not a race...it is a RACE!
TC: What event is your strongest? Your weakest? And your favorite?
Bennett: Cycling is my best, but I don't swim too badly. I can't run.
TC: What are you goals in the sport of triathlon?
Bennett: Keep fit enough to never have to golf.
TC: How has your health/fitness changed through triathlon
Bennett: Upper body and breathing are better than when I just cycled. More balanced fitness.
TC: Before you were a triathlete, you did something else that filled the time that you now put into training. What was it?
Bennett: I have always ridden, so now I split my time with swimming and cycling.
TC: What kind of jobs have you held and which was your least favorite?
Bennett: I've worked since I was 12 (one of seven kids, remember) Paperboy, bus boy, waiter, janitor, lab tech, intern. I like work because it's the people I major on, not the job itself.
TC: What would be your best guilt free dinner?
Bennett: Ham and candied yams with pumpkin cheesecake for dessert.
TC: What gets you pumped up on race day?
Bennett: Fear of failure! Never tell anyone you are doing an event, I mean RACE, until afterwards...
TC: What is your favorite activity on non-training rest days?
Bennett: What's a non-training rest day? Swim, ride walk. Rather, rinse and repeat! okay, okay, I like tinkering with my bike and dinking around the yard.
TC: What is your favorite way to relax and recharge just before the race?
Bennett: Sip a glass of my favorite brew and chat about life with a close friend.
TC: Favorite Athlete?
Bennett: My three sons-good sports, good leaders, winners and class acts all around.
TC: Favorite Food?
Bennett: Free
TC: Favorite Book?
Bennett: Dune. The whole series.
TC: Favorite Quote/Philosophy?
Bennett: Thomas Jefferson, "The happiest times of my life have been spent in the flow of affection among friends."
