Tyler Miner
San Bernardino, CA TC: Where were you born and where did you grow up?
Tyler: I was born in Great Falls, Montana. My father was in the Air Force so we moved around the mid west and then settled down in Redlands, California when I was 10.
TC: How and why did you want to become a triathlete?
Tyler: I had been working out in the gym in an effort to lose some weight when I decided that I need a goal other than weight loss to keep me motivated. I decided to do a 5k. After completing the 5k and enjoying it I was talking to a sales rep of mine and he told me that I should do the Tin man at Cal State, which I did. Big mistake, I was hooked.
TC: What started you on the tri- kick?
Tyler: Completing my first Sprint
TC: How many triathlons have you competed in?
Tyler: 12 or so. 1 Olympic and the rest were sprints.
TC: What were your feelings going into that first Triathlon?
Tyler: I would say that I was a little anxious. I was not sure what to expect. My training was not the best (there was none). I think the weekend before the tri I pulled out the old mountain bike and rode 10 miles and the only running I had been doing was on a tread mill.
TC: What event is your strongest? Your weakest? And your favorite?
Tyler: I don’t think that I excel in any one area, just when I think that I am getting good someone gives me a reality check. I would defiantly say that running is my weakest; I have the endurance but no speed. Biking and swimming would have to be my favorite.
TC: What are you goals in the sport of triathlon?
Tyler: I hope that I can remain injury free and complete my first Ironman in Louisville next year. After that my goals will go in one of two directions; a.) Never do a triathlon again or, b.) Try and complete every ironman event at least once before I die.
TC: How has your health/fitness changed through triathlon
Tyler: I have noticed huge changes in my fitness. My endurance has increased dramatically. Prior to working out I would get heartburn on a regular basis now I never get it. It is virtually impossible for me to get my heart rate above 165.
TC: Before you were a triathlete, you did something else that filled the time that you now put into training. What was it?
Tyler: I was a paid call firefighter for 14 years and when my son was born I did not have the time to continue. Now I use training to fill my time and the wife does not get as mad because I can set the schedule and there is no pager going off at all hours of the night.
TC: What kind of jobs have you held and which was your least favorite?
Tyler: My resume is rather short. I have been working for the same Plumbing, Heating and Air Conditioning Company for the past 17 years. So I guess that would also make it my least favorite job since it is my only “real job”.
TC: What would be your best guilt free dinner?
Tyler: Guilt free? Aren’t they all! I don’t go by a crazy meal plan, I eat what I want in moderation.
TC: What gets you pumped up on race day?
Tyler: I think just being around all of the people gets me pumped up.
TC: What is your favorite activity on non-training rest days?
Tyler: Sleep (that never happens)! I like to work around the house with the kids and wife.
TC: What is your favorite way to relax and recharge just before the race?
Tyler: I like to have a big meal the night before and go to bed by 9pm. I usually sleep very well the night before races. There is no sense in worrying about the alarm, it seems to work every other day of the week!
TC: Favorite Athlete?
Tyler: Tony Troccoli
TC: Favorite Food?
Tyler: Pizza, Chicken, Hamburger, Brats, Beer, Carne Asada Burritos, Ham and Cheese Omelets, Milk, Beer (oh ya, I already said that), Oatmeal. I like it all as long it is not green and belongs to the fruit or vegetable family.
TC: Favorite Book?
Tyler: The Millionaire Next Door
