Getting Ready for the 2012 Season

pht_2012_groupatdeserttri.png

It was recently brought to my attention our club is different than others.  I responded by asking what gave them that impression.  "You treat each other like family" was the response.  "Yes we do" I said,  "Yes we do!" Its been some time since our last newsletter in part due to the success of social media. With both the message board and Facebook active, much of what's happening with our club is real time news. If you're not plugged into either, you're missing out on group workout opportunities, social gatherings, club meetings, free clinics and more. Through the use of these media, our club slowly but surely continues to grow. Membership is up over 100 with a greater percentage of active members than in previous years. Our Riverside members are growing the most and therefore we have begun, thanks to Kandi and Emil, club gatherings and workouts in the Riverside area. We now have two opportunities for coffee night; (1) Last Friday of every month at Bad Ass Coffee in Rancho Cucamonga and the 2nd Monday of every month at Coffee Bean in Riverside . Both are at 7 PM, address listed on the club website at www.triathlonconnection.com.

How Triathlon Connection (TC) has Grown
howtchasgrown.jpg

I recently read an article about the growth of triathlon. In 1993, USAT membership was just short of 16,000 members. Year end 2010, it had over 130,000. Not all triathletes register with USAT so there are many more of us than statistic show. And that got me thinking about how we (TC) has grown; not just in numbers but in other ways.

My First GMR Ride

brivera-gmr3.jpgGMR for the Slow, Fat, Middle Aged Triathlete!! - “I do this to remind myself there is nothing I can’t do” - by Barbara River

I guess the first question would be, “What is GMR?” Well, most folks would call it Glendora Mountain Road. However, my new name is the Gruesome Miserable Road to HEDouble L.

I have heard many things about this road from all the triathlon connection members. The thought of conquering this beast was swelling up inside me. It must be done. I can do it. So finally, after Wildflower, we made a pact. We will do GMR all the way to Baldy Village and back. NO PROBLEM! NOT!

It started two days before. OMG! What am I thinking? I’m a chunky, problematic hip issue, middle age, non athletic, triathlete. I don’t care what peeps are telling me, I CANT DO! I’m going to tell Anna and Paulene I am sick. I’m going to tell them Booger needs me. But yet, in my spirit, I HAVE TO do this. In the back of mind, Coach Tony says, “If it were easy, everyone would do it.” Awe come on and someone please agree with me.

Triathlon Connection for 2010
tcj.jpg 2009 was a great year for Triathlon Connection (TC)! Our numbers are up which means the news is getting out about TC. We grew as a club on a variety of fronts; in numbers, unity, sponsorship, and socially. Balancing life with the need to group train is difficult but many of you found a way making workouts so much more enjoyable. It’s nice to see so many TC members out and about at ungodly hours or after work when the TV and fridge are so much more tempting. It justifies our collective ambition.

A special 2009 thanks to Coates, Renegade Racing, Bad Ass Coffee, PossAbilities, Redlands / Henry Bush Plumbing, and Stealth Cycling for donating to TC’s bank account making uniforms, team tent, and other team equipment possible. Introducing Asics, Xterra, Rudy Project, and a variety of other partners completed a well rounded list of supporters including Top Speed, Kool-n-Fit and a variety of others.

TC Donates to Exceeding Expectations
help.jpg

Many of you already know about TC's annual Ironman Pot Luck where members gather to watch the Ironman World Championships, eat till we roll, and raffle donated items for charity. Our 2009 gathering raised $400. I'm happy to report a check for $200 is on its way to Exceeding Expectations ; a charitable organization benefiting underprivileged kids in the San Bernardino county. The remainder of the money raised will go towards 2010 club events.

Raising funds would not be possible without the generous contributions from the following organizations:

A very special "Thank You" goes out to these folks. Without their help, our raffle would not have been possible. All other prizes were purchased with club funds or donated private party. Looking forward to next year.
